Sellsword’s Neutral L1s are much better than Gotthard’s. Gotthard’s have a nice rolling L1 though, and are the longest straightsword IIRC making them good for PvP. L1-L2-R2 is a true combo. For PvE yeah just mash L1. Running L1 into spinslash > ( followup 1) R2 > R1 > L1 (Followup 2) R1 > R2 > Flip kick .
