First make a four inch square-with a 1"grid. (or use 1" ruled graph paper) Draw a line connecting the top left corner to the mid bottom point. Make another line from the mid bottom point to the upper right corner. Cut out the 3 sections and lay these on your chosen template material (Mylar, cardboard, etc)..., This makes a 12" block and is paper pieced! It's a Circa 1900 pattern!... a real Stash reducer, with each strip being just 1-1/2" wide in varying lengths! Click here for template A! ... Shown here on its side is a quilt of four blocks by five with only a binding! Those of you who love Log Cabins will probably like this one too!, Eight Pointed Star Variation 2. This makes a 12" block, and is paper pieced! Click here for the paper piecing template! The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page . When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try the Eight Pointed Star Variation 2 Block!, 12 Inch Basket Block. ** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **. Using the trapezoid template included, cut out one right facing trap, and one left facing trap. Using the handle template after adding 1/4" seam allowances around it, cut one handle. Also cut one Color 1 3-7/8" square., These should measure 3-1/2"... Sew a Color 7 triangle to the left side of each Nine Patch unit, keeping the straight of the grain on what will be the OUTSIDE of the block... Now sew one of these Nine Patch/tri units to one flat side of the center hex. Start and stop this seam 1/4" from the ends of the hex side. Press seam towards hex..., Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares... Then mark and cut the Color 3 2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares... Now stack the four 5-1/4" squares with all edges aligned and cut on the diagonal. Cut the resultant triangles once more on the diagonal to make quarter square triangles.
